Sparring Session with Chris Broughton
Sparring Session with Chris Broughton
This sparring session offers a clear example of how structured coaching can develop both technical skill and tactical awareness.
Mr Chris Broughton works with 2nd dan Miss Georgia Moore, progressing from fundamental movement into more advanced sparring concepts.
Key focus: rhythm, footwork, and tactical setup
Level: intermediate to advanced sparring development
Establishing Movement and Rhythm
The session begins with the basics of stepping and moving while using the front jab. From there, Chris introduces a rocking drill, encouraging a relaxed rhythm that allows movement to flow rather than feel forced.
Relaxed rhythm creates better timing and clearer decision-making under pressure.
As the drill develops, Georgia puts the gloves on and works closer to the target, focusing on stable foot positioning and maintaining balance while moving in and out of range.
Adding Kicks and Positional Awareness
Kicks are gradually added to the drill, with Chris introducing the concept of the “power box” and explaining how positioning affects both balance and striking effectiveness.
The rhythm is then altered using a switch turning kick, challenging Georgia to adapt timing and maintain structure as the pace changes.
Effective sparring is about being in the right place at the right time.
Using Sets to Create Opportunities
In the final part of the session, Chris introduces the idea of “sets” – deliberate strategies designed to draw specific reactions from an opponent. These sets help create predictable responses, making it easier to score cleanly and consistently.
This section is particularly valuable for competitors looking to move beyond reactive sparring and toward purposeful ring control.
