Alternative Breaks
In the preview video above, Mr Brendan Doogan shares practical ways to adapt grading breaks as we age – keeping the intent of the requirement while prioritising safety and realism.
Breaking requirements can feel more daunting over time, particularly when special technique expectations are involved. Techniques that once felt achievable can become less realistic as bodies change, injuries accumulate, or mobility and confidence shift.
In this video, Mr Brendan Doogan provides food for thought with alternative breaks you can discuss with your instructor or examiner. The goal is not to lower standards – it is to remain true to the original grading requirement, while modifying the approach to something you can safely achieve.
Why alternative breaks matter
Many grading syllabuses include requirements such as an overhead kick or flying high kick. For some students these remain achievable for years, while for others the same requirement becomes a genuine barrier – not because of effort, but because of physical reality. Alternative breaks can help keep progress moving while still testing the correct intent, control, and technical understanding.
A good alternative should still match the purpose of the requirement. The question is not “what is easier?” – it is “what still proves the same skill, safely?”
Practical coaching ideas to consider
- Keep the original intent – choose an alternative that still demonstrates the same core skill.
- Focus on safety first – adapt the break to protect joints, balance, and landing mechanics.
- Discuss options early – avoid last-minute decisions by planning with your instructor or examiner.
- Train the alternative properly – an adapted break still needs preparation, accuracy, and confidence.
