Grading Breaks with Kyla Walton

Breaking for Gradings with Miss Kyla Walton

In the sample video above, ITF World Power Breaking Champion Miss Kyla Walton introduces practical coaching on three important grading breaks: front elbow strike, side piercing kick, and turning kick.

This 32-minute class focuses on the details that make breaking more reliable – correct preparation, body position, accuracy, confidence, and committed execution.

Miss Walton brings world-class experience to a topic that many students find challenging. Breaking is not simply about power. It also requires timing, structure, correct distance, and the ability to stay calm under pressure.

In this first seminar video, she works through three colour belt grading requirements in a clear and practical way. Students can see how each break should be approached, where common mistakes appear, and how to train the movement progressively before attempting the board.

For students preparing for grading, this class is especially useful because it separates the break into manageable parts. Rather than hoping the board will break on the day, students can learn how to build the correct action step by step.

The three breaks covered are:

  • Front elbow strike
  • Side piercing kick
  • Turning kick

Each of these has its own challenge. The front elbow strike needs close-range commitment and strong body alignment. The side piercing kick requires correct foot position, hip use, and a direct line into the target. The turning kick depends on accuracy, sharp rotation, and good balance through the contact point.

Key benefits of this class include:

  • Clear guidance from a current world-level power breaking specialist
  • Practical advice for colour belt grading preparation
  • Improved understanding of distance, targeting, and body position
  • Useful corrections for instructors helping students prepare for breaking

This is the first of two seminars filmed with Miss Walton. The second class focuses on tournament breaking, including the requirements used at World Cup and World Championship level.
