Inside an IIC
Inside an IIC
This Inside TKDC post provides background and context for the Premium video Inside an IIC, filmed at International Instructors Course (IIC) 148 in Auckland, New Zealand. At the time, no one realised this March 2020 course would be the last IIC held for all of 2020 and much of 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The International Instructors Course is a cornerstone of ITF Taekwon-Do instructor training, bringing together senior masters and instructors to share technical knowledge, teaching philosophy, and practical coaching insight. Although this course was not officially filmed, some unique footage was captured from within the classes and informal moments around the event.
The video includes sections from Grand Master Pierre Laquerre teaching stretching and self-defence concepts. While the audio quality reflects the informal nature of the recording, the technical content and teaching approach provide valuable insight into how senior instructors communicate principles rather than just techniques.
Also featured is behind-the-scenes footage of Grand Master Marano speaking candidly about his passion for technique and teaching. These unscripted moments highlight the culture of the IIC environment, where learning continues outside formal class structures and knowledge is shared freely whenever the opportunity arises.
For instructors, this session offers a rare look inside an ITF International Instructors Course, showing not only what is taught, but how senior masters engage, explain, and inspire. It serves as both a historical record of IIC 148 and a reminder of the value of in-person instructor education within the ITF.
