Chon-Ji – Inside the Premium Pattern Lesson
Chon-Ji Tul – Inside the Premium Pattern Lesson
This premium Chon-Ji lesson focuses on helping students build correct fundamentals from the very beginning of their patterns training. In the sample video above, you see footage from the full lesson, where Mark Trotter takes Niketa Wells through the entire pattern step by step before finishing with a complete performance.
Note: Niketa performs the pattern extra slowly so you can clearly see the movements and stances. In normal performance, Chon-Ji would be completed with more flow, rhythm, and natural speed.
Why Chon-Ji matters:
Although Chon-Ji is taught early, it establishes habits that influence every pattern that follows. Balance, posture, and basic movement quality formed here tend to stay with a student for years.
Chon-Ji is required for 9th gup students and is a key part of the journey towards yellow belt. While it appears straightforward, it places real demands on stance length, line of travel, and relaxed power. This is why ITF practitioners of all grades continue to practise and refine Chon-Ji throughout their training.
Chon-Ji is not just about memorising movements. It is about learning how correct fundamentals feel – especially consistency of stance, clean directional changes, and correct application of sine wave.
The premium lesson uses a clear, progressive teaching approach. Each movement is explained in practical terms, with common errors highlighted and corrected, before finishing with a complete run-through of the pattern as a whole.
- Step-by-step instruction designed for beginner students
- Clear coaching cues instructors can use immediately
- Common mistakes identified and corrected early
- Complete performance of the full pattern shown in context
Patterns Hub focus:
The Chon-Ji Patterns Hub is the key companion resource for this lesson.
In the Hub you will find the history and meaning of Chon-Ji, along with technical insights that support what is shown in the video – including guidance on stance consistency and correct use of sine wave.
Used together, the premium lesson and the Patterns Hub give instructors and students a structured framework for learning, teaching, and refining Chon-Ji from white belt level onwards.
