Acceleration Power in Patterns
Acceleration Power in Patterns
In this session, Master Thierry Meyour (7th dan, Finland) works with Miss Mira Sjövall to explore acceleration power for ITF patterns, with practical ideas instructors can apply to improve speed, timing, and power expression in pattern performance.
Acceleration power in patterns is not simply about trying to move faster. It is about how an athlete builds speed through the movement, coordinates the body efficiently, and delivers decisive power at the right moment. For instructors, this topic is especially useful when students have solid technique but their patterns still look flat, rushed, or lacking in impact.
Master Meyour is known for drawing on sport science and other disciplines to support his Taekwon-Do coaching, with a strong interest in thinking outside the box. That approach led him to explore methods such as the Alexander Technique and movement principles often used by dancers and other athletes, then translate them into practical coaching for ITF patterns.
The result is a session that helps instructors look beyond basic cues like “move quicker” and instead focus on posture, relaxation, alignment, and timing, so acceleration can happen naturally and power can be delivered cleanly. These ideas can be particularly valuable for senior students working on higher-level patterns where the difference is often seen in rhythm, flow, and quality of movement.
If you teach patterns regularly, this video offers fresh coaching language and practical concepts to help students improve acceleration, develop more dynamic pattern performance, and express power with better control and clarity.
