Sparring Tips from GM Trajtenberg

In the preview video above, the Late Grand Master Pablo Trajtenberg shares thoughtful sparring ideas drawn from a free sparring class delivered at the 2017 ITFNZ Instructors Conference.

Grand Master Pablo Trajtenberg was one of the world’s most senior Taekwon-Do instructors. He began training in Argentina in 1968, later attaining 9th degree black belt, and served as President of the International Taekwon-Do Federation as well as a long-standing member of the ITF Technical Committee.

In 2017, TKD Coaching was honoured to have Grand Master Trajtenberg as a special guest at the ITFNZ Instructors Conference, where he conducted a wide-ranging class on free sparring. The session explored sparring as a learning process rather than simply a competitive exercise.

Key sparring ideas explored

The class covered a number of interesting concepts designed to help practitioners broaden their understanding of sparring and improve adaptability, awareness, and control.

  • Sparring without restriction, including freedom of target selection.
  • The role of relaxation in developing speed and fluid movement.
  • Applying reaction force effectively within sparring exchanges.
  • Structured sparring exercises to develop timing and perception.

One recurring theme was the idea of changing just one thing at a time. By constantly experimenting and staying open to new approaches, sparring remains a powerful tool for ongoing development.

More than competition sparring

This session is particularly valuable for instructors and practitioners interested in the broader educational role of sparring. The ideas shared encourage curiosity, adaptability, and thoughtful training, offering insight that extends well beyond tournament preparation.
