Five “Groups” of Kicks According to Brendan Doogan
There Are Only Five Kicks in Taekwon-Do!
Brendan Doogan
Did you know there are only five kicks in Taekwon-Do?
Well… five groups of kicks anyway.
This is the theory according to World Champion Brendan Doogan, presented in his typically enlightening and entertaining style.
In this session, Brendan explains how the wide variety of Taekwon-Do kicks can be organised into just five core groups, making it much easier to understand, analyse, and teach kicking technique.
This way of categorising kicks is particularly useful for instructors when breaking techniques down for students, and when analysing both patterns and sparring applications.

In the clip above, World Champion Brendan Doogan introduces his theory that all Taekwon-Do kicks can be organised into just five core groups.
It’s a simple but powerful way of looking at kicking technique, and one that helps instructors and students better understand how different kicks relate to each other across patterns and sparring.
