Yul-Gok – Inside the Premium Pattern Lesson

Yul-Gok – Inside the Premium Pattern Lesson

This premium Yul-Gok lesson is a focused coaching session that takes students step by step through one of the longer and more demanding colour belt patterns.
In the full video, Mark Trotter works with 3rd dan Matt Bowden to break Yul-Gok down movement by movement, highlighting key technical details as the pattern develops. It was filmed at Mr Trotters own Do-Jang in Auckland.

Yul-Gok is the 5th gup pattern and contains 38 movements. By this stage, students are expected to manage longer sequences, clearer sine wave application, and more consistent intermediate positions. This lesson is designed to slow the pattern down and address those demands in a practical, coach-led way.

Rather than rushing through the sequence, the lesson focuses on understanding how each movement connects to the next. This makes it easier to identify where balance, timing, or positioning begins to drift as fatigue and complexity increase.

  • Step-by-step coaching of all 38 movements in Yul-Gok
  • Clear guidance on sine wave application in longer sequences
  • Detailed attention to intermediate positions and transitions
  • Practical corrections instructors can apply when teaching Yul-Gok

The sample clip highlights two common problem areas in Yul-Gok: correct trajectory of the blocks during the hooking block sequences, and proper positioning of the intermediate position. Seeing these details addressed in isolation makes them easier to recognise and correct in full performance.

This lesson is especially valuable for students moving into higher colour belt grades, where consistency and control across an entire pattern become just as important as individual technique execution.
