Advanced Sparring Drills

Advanced Sparring Drills

This Inside TKDC post provides background and coaching context for the Premium video Advanced Sparring Drills. The session features elite-level training methods used by Camila Urbina and her coach Ricardo Gonzalez, offering instructors practical ideas for developing advanced sparring performance.

The drills in this video go beyond basic sparring movement and introduce structured training methods designed to sharpen footwork accuracy, coordination, reaction speed, and timing under pressure. Simple training tools such as pool noodles and floor ladders are used to create clear visual cues and movement constraints, helping athletes refine distance control and decision-making.

Ricardo Gonzalez has been training Taekwon-Do since 1996 and has coached since 2006. He is a student of Mr Adrian Paris and works professionally as a Physical Education teacher. Over the years he has coached students who have achieved major results across Pan American and South American events, as well as World Cups and World Championships, in both sparring and patterns.

Ricardo has coached Camila Urbina since 2001, and the session reflects a long-term approach to athlete development rather than quick fixes. The focus is on repeatable training patterns that build strong movement habits, improve control of distance, and sharpen timing through specific, progressive drills.

While these exercises are clearly aimed at experienced students, many of the ideas can be scaled for club training. Instructors will get value from the way the session structures footwork, spacing, and timing tasks so athletes learn to move with purpose and apply skills under realistic sparring conditions.
