Control and Restraint Techniques
This video documents the application of control and restraint techniques in a self-defence context, drawing on the experience of Grand Master Rocky Rounthwaite (9th dan). With over thirty years of service in the New Zealand Police, these methods proved effective in managing resistant situations while maintaining control and safety.
The session presents practical restraint principles that were developed and refined through real-world operational use. The emphasis is on maintaining balance, positioning, and leverage to achieve control with minimal force.
Grand Master Rounthwaite’s approach reflects decades of frontline experience, focusing on restraint methods that are efficient, controlled, and realistic under pressure.
The techniques demonstrated include body positioning, balance disruption, joint control, and structured restraint sequences. Attention is given to maintaining awareness and stability throughout each phase of engagement.
These methods were shaped by practical necessity in situations where rapid compliance and officer safety were both critical. The principles shown remain relevant for understanding control dynamics within cooperative self-defence training environments.
The short sample clip above shows an excerpt from the session. The full premium video provides extended coverage of the techniques and their practical application.
