TKD Kids Syllabus (Mini-Kids Programme)

The Mini-Kids Taekwon-Do programme has become one of the most effective pathways for introducing young children to Taekwon-Do in New Zealand. First launched in 2009, it provides instructors with a structured, age-appropriate system that helps children develop essential skills while preparing them for the ITFNZ grading syllabus. Many clubs have reported strong growth and improved retention after adding Mini-Kids to their timetable.

The programme was created by Auckland instructor Mrs Shirley Pygott, who spent many years refining a curriculum specifically designed for young learners. Her approach was not to simplify Taekwon-Do, but to present the same techniques and skills taught to older students—sequenced in a way that aligns with the physical and mental development of children aged around four to seven. The result is a programme that builds confidence, coordination, discipline, and enjoyment, while still being authentic to ITF Taekwon-Do.

A structured pathway

The first part of the Mini-Kids syllabus is divided into five levels, each marked by a coloured stripe added to the student’s belt after successful testing. These testings are normally held once per term within the child’s regular dojang, where they feel comfortable and supported. The upper levels often take longer, and most children complete all five stages in around one to one-and-a-half years.

Graduates of the Mini-Kids programme are then well-prepared to begin training toward their first grading to 9th Gup. Instructors consistently report that Mini-Kids graduates transition much more smoothly and confidently into the main ITFNZ syllabus. From here the kids can move to the second tier of the Mini-Kids syllabus from 9th to 8th gup.

Supporting instructors and students

Instructors who choose to offer Mini-Kids can order the official workbook when registering new members. This replaces the standard handbook and gives children an engaging and easy-to-follow record of their progress. It also reinforces learning at home, helping parents understand what their child is working toward.

Clubs offering the official programme are marked with the Mini-Kids logo on the ITFNZ website’s Locations page, providing reassurance to parents seeking age-appropriate Taekwon-Do for their children.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long does it take a child to complete the Mini-Kids programme?
Most children take between one and one-and-a-half years to complete all levels of the Mini-Kids syllabus from white belt (10th gup) to 9th gup. Progress depends on age, attendance, and confidence, but the carefully structured levels make steady improvement very achievable for young learners.

  • At what age can a child start Mini-Kids?
The programme is designed for children approximately four to seven years old. It provides an age-appropriate introduction to Taekwon-Do, focusing on coordination, balance, discipline, and simple fundamental techniques.

  • Do Mini-Kids receive stripes or belt colours as they progress?
Yes. The first part (book 1) of the Mini-Kids syllabus is divided into five levels, and after each successful testing the child receives a coloured stripe on their white belt. Once all levels are completed, they are ready to begin training toward their first formal ITFNZ grading to 9th Gup.

  • Where are Mini-Kids classes available?
In New Zealand, clubs that offer the official Mini-Kids Programme are marked with the Mini-Kids logo in the Locations section of the ITFNZ website. Many New Zealand schools now include Mini-Kids as an important part of their junior training pathway. Other countries have similar programmes.

  • Is Mini-Kids a simplified version of Taekwon-Do?
No. Mini-Kids teaches the same core skills and techniques found in the ITFNZ syllabus, but delivered in a sequence and style suited to young children. It prepares students extremely well for future gradings.
