Mental Training and Conditioning
Mental Training and Conditioning with Grand Master Davidson
In the sample video above, 74 year old Grand Master Davidson shares a fascinating training session exploring the foundations of efficient martial arts movement. Rather than focusing on specific patterns or sparring techniques, this class examines the underlying principles that allow techniques to become faster, more powerful and more controlled.
The session begins with breathing exercises designed to develop awareness of the body’s centre. Students learn how controlled breathing, relaxation and posture work together to improve balance, coordination and the ability to transfer energy through the body.
Key Principle: Power is not created through excessive muscular tension. Instead, Grand Master Davidson emphasises relaxation, correct body mechanics and directing energy from the body’s centre into the technique.
Throughout the class, students work through a variety of mobility and conditioning exercises involving the neck, shoulders, wrists, hips and entire body. These movements are designed to improve flexibility, coordination and body awareness while reinforcing correct alignment.
Topics Covered
- Breathing and relaxation methods
- Developing awareness of the body’s centre
- Posture and head positioning
- Neck, shoulder and hip mobility exercises
- Balance and body control
- Finger, wrist and fist conditioning
- Situational awareness and use of the senses
- Reaction force and body mechanics
- Weight transfer and movement efficiency
- Generating speed without unnecessary tension
An interesting section of the class focuses on awareness and observation. Grand Master Davidson discusses the importance of maintaining good visual awareness of your surroundings and how posture and head position influence what you can see and react to.
Students are also introduced to a series of conditioning drills for the fingers, hands, wrists and striking surfaces. These exercises are performed in a controlled manner and are linked directly to the concepts of structure, alignment and energy transfer.
Training Tip: One of the recurring themes throughout this session is the ability to switch instantly between relaxation and tension. Remaining relaxed until the moment of execution allows techniques to accelerate more quickly and produce greater speed.
The latter part of the lesson explores movement and power generation. Through simple stepping, weight transfer and hand techniques, Grand Master Davidson demonstrates how effective power comes from coordinated body movement rather than isolated arm strength.
This is an excellent session for practitioners who want to better understand the deeper principles that sit behind all Taekwon-Do techniques. The concepts presented can be applied to patterns, sparring, self-defence and general training regardless of rank.

Background & Interesting Details
Many martial arts systems teach breathing and relaxation, but Grand Master Davidson presents these concepts as practical training tools rather than abstract theories. By combining breathing drills, conditioning exercises and movement training in a single session, students can immediately experience how relaxation influences speed, balance and power generation.
GM Davidson would like to acknowledge inspiration he gained from Mr Harry Wong and his book called ‘Dynamic Tension’ published in 1980.
